Collin Murray-Boyles: Prospect Overview and Scouting Report
Nic Rioja breaks down the puzzle of Collin Murray-Boyles, and why NBA teams are falling in love with a 6'7" center. SEC All-Freshman in 2024 and graded out as one of the best freshmen in CBB.
Few players have been as difficult to come to a consensus on as Collin Murray-Boyles. Ultimately, it boils down to:
Why It Works: combo of size/athleticism gives him an edge as a jack-of-all-trades type of player. Boyles shines as a complimentary piece, doing all the little things (cutting, screening, rebounding, passing, defending) that contribute to winning basketball and is a legitimate NBA impact player for years.
Why It Doesn’t: the track record of 6'7" big men who can’t shoot succeeding in the NBA is nearly zero. Boyles falls into a tweener role where he does not have enough perimeter skills to keep up with wings, and is too small to handle NBA bigs. His non-shooting clogs the offenses he is a part of, making NBA success harder to come by.
Of these two options, I lean towards that it WILL work. Murray-Boyles has all of the tools (minus the shot) that NBA teams will love, and remember, what we saw of him was what we were getting as a raw 18 year old freshman. Murray-Boyles progression into a more magnified role in year 2 will be something to keep an eye on.
With a year under his belt, expect Murray-Boyles to emerge as the leader of this Gamecocks squad and one of the best players in the SEC.
